Anti-virus recommendation?

Hello World,

so far I have had disappointing resutlt with virus scanners.
I'm a software engineer which means I compile and rebuild
executables all the time. The performance impact of
most virus scanners is simply unacceptable for me.

Can anyone recommend a virus scanner that I can switch off
COMPLETELY (so it eats up no CPU cycles), and only switch
it on right before I retrieve my e-mail or download any
stuff from the internet?

A reliable "scanner-only" product would be just as well for
me...

If you use Pegasus for email there is no need for any antivirus while
using it. Similarly, if you use Free Agent for newsgroups you require
no antivirus scanner while using it. For browsing, use the latest
version of Mozilla .... version 1.5a is excellent. No realtime
antivirus required there either but if you're paranoid you can
selectively enable/disable Java Script and Java. I've never found that
necessary, however.

So what other internet habits do you have which require realtime
antivirus? If there aren't any such "bad habits", use only on-demand
scanning and don't compromise on using the best such as KAV or
products that use the KAV engine such as F-Secure ... and/or McAfee.

If you mean on-demand scanning that's what I'm suggesting. Use more
than one product to gain the benefits of multiple "opinions" on your
downloads. I use KAVDOS, McAfee DOS and F-Prot on Win 9x/ME. But never
trust antivirus scanners, they are very fallible. Use only downloads
from trustworthy sources.
