anti virus protection

It will vary depending on what software you have purchased for antivirus
protection. Normally you will see the icon in the system tray (next to the
clock in the lower right corner of the screen). If you see the icon there
right click on it and select something like "enable". This is pretty
generic, but not knowing what AV product you have leaves us handicapped.

If you're getting the red shield and the popup that your system is not
protected, then make sure you have antivirus software installed and working.

HOW DO I TURN MY ANTI VIRUS PROTECTION ON

No idea since you've told us nothing about your computer or your
antivirus program. It can be very hard for a non-technical person to
know what to include in a post to a tech support newsgroup. Here is a
link that will help you with that:

http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

After you've read the information there, come back with all pertinent
details (and not in all caps, please since that is considered shouting
and rude) and someone will help you.

While i agree with Malke that there is not enough information for a
constructiver reply one must ask 'who turned it off?' When anti virus
application are installed they are turned 'on' when the computer is booted.
If you need to turn it on one can only assume you have turned it off, and as
this would require you closing the anti virus down (it would then turn
itself back on again when you next rebooted) by clicking Exit or, less
likely, you disabling it in msconfig.

Windows XP does not include an antivirus program.

I would recommend trying Avast! antivirus.
I've been using it for over a year and its been great!
It's also FREE!

avast! 4 Home Edition Download

I would also recommend installing the new Windows Defender
antispyware program. It's also FREE!

HOW DO I TURN MY ANTI VIRUS PROTECTION ON

Perhaps if you were to tell us which one (out of dozens of
possibilities) specific anti-virus application you've purchased or
downloaded and installed, someone might be able to help. Although, this
question really should be directed to the maker of whatever anti-virus
application you're using.

What it all boils down to is: No one can help if you don't provide at
least a modicum of information.

Also, please unstick your CapsLock key. Posting in all caps, as you
have done, is the Usenet equivalent of shouting, and is considered very
rude by a large number of people. More importantly, posting in all caps
makes the post harder to read, further reducing your chances of getting
help; a great many people won't even try to read such a message. If you
really want help, simply comply with the dictates of common courtesy and
the conventions of the milieu.
