I've tried installing Norton then McAfee. All I get after loading the disc on
both is a flash for a second of the install screen. Both companies want big
dollars for phone support. I'm ready to do the recovery discs that came with
the computer. Is there a downside to doing that?

You may well already have either a virus on your machine.
Can you do a virus scan online?
Here are a few free ones:
Online Antivirus scanners:

I did all those. It was indicated I had a few. I purchased the anti virus to
get rid of them.

AV software will not fix Trojans or exploits. What are the viruses that
were indicated? Removing an infection varies depending on the virus.

I use Symantec AV and the last time I hit a malware web site it did nothing
more than tell me it had encountered a virus and it could NOT fix it.

Here is the list compiled from more than one internet anti virus scans:

Download all of these, Boot into safe mode and run the programs. Download
them before you boot into safe mode (you can not get to the internet in
safe mode).

Get Trend's Sysclean by going to http://home.epix.net/~artnpeg/
Download and Unzip SYS-UP.ZIP to a new folder having a suggested name and
path C:\SYSCLEAN. When first run, SYS-UP.EXE will download the required
files to that (current) folder and then it will automatically invoke the
Sysclean.com program. Future uses of SYS-UP.EXE will update both the
program and pattern files. This is a slow running program but it does a
good job.

Although none of the infections you list are on their detection list, you
could try McAfee's Stinger at http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

The Kapersky free removal tools at http://www.kaspersky.com/removaltools do
not list your infections either.

If you do not have the following programs--download them, update them, and
then run them. Fix everything these four programs find:
Spybot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
WinPatrol http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
They work well together so run all four of them.

HiJackThis http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html
Do NOT fix anything HiJackThis finds.

Reboot into Windows and run the programs again. Fix everything except for
the HiJackThis results, post them here or on another expert group. Wait for
someone to help you identify which items to fix. At this point, you need
someone with more experience than I have.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply. However I'm really tired of downloading anti this or
that stuff which either won't run or after the website's scan completes they
tell me I need to pay $29.99 to find out how to get rid of what they found.
I really would like a magic bullet but I was told by 2 people today that
with my problem I have to save anything I want to and run my recovery discs.
Oh hell I'll probably try a few of your links as soon as I finish typing
this.

If you are running Win 98, their DOS version of Fprot is in my opinion the best.
Otherwise use their Windows evaluation version.

Good luck.

There is a lot of $Scumware$ on the Internet, you can easily find them with
Google. None of them will fix your problems, they will most likely infect
you with adware or spyware. If you want "more bang for your buck" you will
look for a solution on this newsgroup, not Googled websites.

All of the recommended programs are FREE and are very effective. You have
the worst Trojan infection I have seen. You should be (more) proactive, "An
ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Ben Franklin
