anti-virus for pitiful connections?

Is there any anti-virus software that can do something like gradually
download the database updates it needs in small snippets each time you
happen to be connected (preferably in some kind of priority order so the
recognition patterns for the most widespread get installed first)?

The common operation most programs seem to use of needing to download whole
new databases in megabyte hunks doesn't work so well when you not only have
a very iffy dial-up connection, but also have to pay by the minute since
there are no local ISPs near this particular computer.

(Of course, by the same token, if this computer got infected, it would
be unlikely to do widespread harm :-).

Just curious...

True!
AVG used to be like the rest and usually you had to download the whole
database each time, and sometimes the program too.
But now it just downloads small patches (usually, anyway).

Try AVG it updates in seconds ! (and its free)

AVG will prompt you if there is a major update of the program however
they are only ever 1 or 2MB so not all that bad on dialup. The virus
defs are [normally] updated daily. Have never seen a virus def update
bigger than 200KB, not that I can remember anyway.
