Anti-Virus Dilemma

I recently upgraded to Vista Premium from XP. On XP, I was running a free
(7.1?) version of AVG and, after upgrading, found that it no longer worked. I
bought the Vista version of Kaspersky and tried to install it. It wouldn't
let me install the Kaspersky program until I uninstalled the AVG. Problem is,
my computer does not have any AVG files that I can find. However, Windows
Defender still recognizes AVG as the only Virus protection I have. It's also
listed under "uninstall programs". When I try to uninstall it though, it
gives me a window that says "Installation failed!". I downloaded the new 7.5
version that some people recommended on this site, but to no avail.
Basically, what I'm asking for is any other possible way I could uninstall
this "ghost" AVG program (ghost because I can't find any of the files that
come with it).

I have absolutely no idea what to do and I'd greatly appreciate some help.

Why not update AVG to 7.5 which is Vista compatible?

Ooops sorry I just realised you did try 7.5. Not sure why that didn't work
for you as it has for everyone I know who is using Vista.
 
Something like this happened to me recently also, I'm not sure on the exact
reason why. To fix the problem I reinstalled Windows, it's kind of sad that
it couldn't be fixed easier than this but that is ok. I'd recommend
partitioning your hard drive so you can backup any documents etc that you
would like to keep.

Sometimes the antivirus companys provide uninstall applications to
completely remove any files their software might have put on your computer,
BUT since this didn't work for me I reinstalled. I don't want to point
fingers at what might have cause the problem, but I'm wondering if you use
"P2P" software?

--OR-- you can contact Microsoft or maybe even AVG directly through phone or
e-mail, maybe they've got a better way to fix the problem.

You can manually remove AVG by doing the following.
Boot the system in safe mode. Delete all files and folders for AVG.

Run regedit and do a search for AVG. Delete all references to AVG in the system registry.
Reboot the system and you should be able to install your Anti-Virus program
