I love it! It is small, light on resources, and does not interfere with
other processes. Note that it does not scan emails while they are being
downloaded, so it may not be suitable for those who use Outlook Express.
However, it will not let you save infected documents to your computer.
The updates are frequent and comprehensive, but relatively large and
slow to download if you have a dialup connection.

Not a big deal. The minute you try to open the infected EMAIL attachment,
AntiVir should detect the virus and prevent any damage. IMHO, most EMAIL
scanners just slow the process of downloading the EMAIL. There are many
EMAILS that you may just delete without ever opening them.

If you want a FREE AV program that will scan each EMAIL as it arrives
(before you open up the attachment) then try AVAST Home edition. (OR AVG
but AVG only supports OE5)

I've replaced AntiVir with Avast as I got sick of the length of time
it took to update the AV database on a dial-up. It was even more
frustrating when there was also a program update - it gave no option
to only download the AV file - you had to downoad the whole lot in
one go - 6+ megs can take a while to download, especially if you
decided to check for an update with only 20 or so minutes of your
session remaining. Aside from that, I found it to be very effective -
especially after they finally changed their warning/requested action
from German to English (I once had a virus message appear & had to go
to a translation site just to work out which button I should click to
heal/delete the file).

Avast is very good - I use Mozilla email, so it's nice to be able to
scan incoming & outgoing emails. Updates are small as well, and you
have the option to just update the AV file, or to check for a program
update as well.

Don't understand - everyone says that Avast is free but their website
says 60 days. Which is it?

It is free, you just need to get the free registration key after the
time period is up. Aside from that updates are free, etc..

I used AVG until I decided to give avast! a shot. I love avast!

I tried Avast some time ago but configering the mailclient (Netscape
here) confused me with the necessary special entries for the names for
POP/SMTP so I gave up and stay further with my BitDefenderPro 6.5. How
did you that with Avast in the Mozilla client?

I'm using AVG, and haven't used OE (any version) in years. The FAQ on the
Grisoft website says it only supports Outlook (not even OE) but it works
with a variety of other email clients.

I very much like Anti-Vir. I have a broadband connection so the
downloads do not bother me. The defs are updated several times a week
with a program/scan engine update 1-2 times a month. A real bother if
you have dial-up.

I am not one to have my mail scanned by and a/v client. It slows down
the process (IMO) and Spampal slows it down enough without adding to the
fray. Besides, I cannot save a file if it is infected, so I do not need
a scanner to scan my mail. I do not use IE (Go Moz!) so I FEEL better
protected from scripts, exploits.

Full info on my set-up / software picks are on my web page under the
"Tools of the Trade" link.

I have tried Avast and AVG but was not as happy with them from a GUI
standpoint (just personal opinion/prefs here...).

They don't work well with Outlook either. I tried both Avast and AVG and
they "clogged up" my email after several hours. Not very good...
