There are none worth recommending. The authors of Spybot S&D need to get
busy. :-)

1. I can tell: There is no good anti-trojan freeware.
2. If you can manage with your firewall there is no possibility to connect
to your PC via trojan (unless you get a remote keylogger).
3. Anti-virus software detects all common trojans and keyloggers.
4. Check running processes from time to time. Not every trojan is common.

Sorry Mick. I have to respond through your post because I didn't get the
OP.

McAfee AVERT Stinger Version 1.8.6 built on Sep 19 2003
Stand-alone, use it until they make another one. Then delete it and
download the next build. The way they go about it is kind of weird but it's
free. You'll have to look-up the URL.

Thanks to all those who responded.

Without replying to all individual posts, and having followed several
leads, I think I concur with Aska's response.

Haven't found any freeware worth installing on a permanent basis.

Starting to think the idea is to try all the "trial" versions for
their limited free time period one after the other. Should give me
about 12 months worth.

What a cheapskate I am!!

1. Use google ng archives.
2. Swat It is free.
3. Stinger is limited.
4. Some available scanners.
5. Some available online scanners.
6. Monitor startup and running programs.
7. Antiadware effective.
8. Firewalls effective.

1. Seeker, discussions about antitrojans are in the Google ng archives
for the last quarter. I'm doing much of this from memory so I've
probably missed some programs as well as other good references.

Nevermind about this one seems not to be freeware on their site at
http://swatit.org/, sorry.

2. Swat It - The Pro version has more features and more frequent
updates.

"All Product and File Signature Updates are Totally FREE, this means
that you will never have to pay a single penny to get the very latest
version of Swat It or to update the File Signatures." - SwatIt.org

3. McAfee AVERT Stinger - This removes roughly 30 current malware
applications. Great if you are infected with one of them, but ....

"Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific
viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but
rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an
infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine
technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files,
and scan performance optimizations." - (McAfee) Network Associates
(sorry, I overwrote the actual cite)

4. There are several antitrojan scanner alternatives in addition to
standard antivirus products (which are getting better).

SpyHunter
Swat It
Bazooka
X-Cleaner
McAfee's AVERT Stinger

5. Online antitrojan scanners include:

TrojanScan - (via GFI or TrojanScan)
PestScan - (via PestPatrol or PestScan)

6. Numerous antitrojan or related applications include realtime or
near realtime features for monitoring startup and running programs. A
few of these are:

WinPatrol
WinSonar
System Safety Monitor
RegistryProt and AutostartViewer (or whatever at DiamondCS)
Starter by Codestuff
StartRight
Startup List
Many other startup managers/viewers
Many other process viewers

7. AntiAdware programs are effective against some trojans.

Spybot
Ad-aware

8. Firewall with outgoing controls, especially application specific.
(See System Safety Monitor for a supplemental application firewall.)

Again, please review posts in this newsgroup for the past quarter for
specifics:
trojan OR antitrojan OR startup
as appropropriate.

If you practice Safehex, there's little chance of getting a
trojan. For an early warning system to detect possible trojans
before they can do their dirty work, try free, tiny, Win Patrol.

I think you have the right idea, Seeker. I have been using TDS-3
trialware. I may wait a few weeks and then try one of the
light-weights. Or not. I had some forensics software (Stealer, for
example) stored on the computer in a zip file and it spotted the .exe
files of many of the programs as dangerous. At least I'm satisfied
that all the machines in the network are at this time trojan-free, and
that was my primary objective. It also spotted HackTool.exe, which
some coders (and hackers) use to unpack files.
