So just where is the best place to attatch the clip from an anti-static
wristband when working on stuff?

I clip it to the computer case.

Are you registered as a bone marrow donor? You regenerate what you
donate. You are offered the chance to donate only if you match a person
on the recipient list. Visit www.marrow.org or call your local Red Cross
and ask about registering to be a bone marrow donor.

As long as the case itself is earthed

How do you "earth" the case? Isn't it grounded just sitting there on your
desk?

Sorry for a stupid question.

Thanks,

RC

you sit it on a grounding mat.
this in turn is clipped to the mains plug-style earthing point, along with
your wriststrap. whole kit available from rs/maplins etc for about a
tenner.

Or leave the PSU plugged in, but switched off. ("hard" switch on PSU
itself)

You can do what you like, mate, but if you do that, and there's any sort of
fault such as live coming into contact with the case, then you'll get a
perfect path to earth through the plugged in mains cable. Get in the way,
and you'll get fried.

Earthing strap, with a big resistor in line. Anything else is dangerous,
period. You might never have to find out, but should a fault develop it's
better to do it the right way rather than the free way.

You should clip it to your Johnson; so, you complete the circuit.

Guess I've been taunting fate, huh?

Thanks for the tip.

If all you have is the wrist strap style, with no mat, then you should clip
it onto a bare metal part of the case. It is also a good idea to leave the
PSU plugged in, but switched off via the switch in the back ... this will
provide an earth ground similar to the solution below.

The ideal situation involves an anti-static mat that has both connections to
a wrist strap and to an earth ground (via the round ground hole on the mains
plug)
