Hi All,

Been running this SW for a few months with no issue, then
last night it all went bad.

I had to reboot my laptop after getting several popups
indicating that "Microsoft AntiSpyware has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." So I sent the error report and rebooted.

Upon reboot, XP did a disk integrity check and fixed lots
of issues. YIkes!

So I logged in and reverted to a restore point earlier in
the day. Same problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled,
Same problem.

Interestingly, I had similar problems with other apps,
Spybot S&D, firefox. Reinstalling those apps fixed the
problem however.

Any ideas? Thanks... Peter

I've presently got a VPC running Windows 2000 which exhibits a similar
issue.

I did find one odd thing, though: The system tray icon does in fact run on
this machine. Either trying to open the UI from the menus, or by
right-clicking the icon causes the crash. However, if I initiate a scan,
and then halt the scan, I can use the program normally in some limited
testing I did yesterday.

Not in my system tray... :-(

FAQ for Microsoft Antispyware:

You might take a look at what code the install puts in \system32.

I think gc*.* covers much of it, but to really find out you need to expand
the download with the /a switch by installing to a dummy location, and look
at the various subdirectories to see what is supposed to go where--at least
that's my amateur approach to it. Deleting all the related stuff ought to
allow for a clean installation.

At this point, I don't have a handle on whether Registry information is a
problem--I've completely ignored what Microsoft Antispyware puts in the
registry--but then again, I mostly have completely trouble-free installs.
So I don't have an opinion about whether clearing out registry entries is
wise or not--I generally try to avoid messing with the registry unless
there's no other way to fix an issue.
