Anti Spyware Beta

Innocent as I am, and checking the Windows webpages I
discovered the new antispyware beta program. Downloaded
it, was successful, installed it, ran it and failed.
Clicking the icon the pop-up message says "loading", and
then dies. Why's that? I do have access to the help files,
uninstall files, but not to the actual program to manually
scan my PC (I run on WINNT 2000).

Any suggestions?

Thanks and regards,
Danker

I think the OS you are using is not being supported, but I could be wrong

So do you think that my Windows 2000 OS does not support
the MS antispyware Beta to run on my computer?

Danker

That is not true - MSAntiSpyware runs on Windows 2000/XP/2003.

Danker - Check the system requirements (
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/requirements.mspx
), try install and scan the system under safe mode. And/or try to use any
additional software, such as for example Spybot Search&Destroy, Ad-Aware
Personal, CWShredder.

Windows 2000 is definitely supported.. You are seeing a bug, or at least a
problem with your particular installation.

Can you try an update install to see if it corrects the problem:

Control Panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft Antispyware, Change,
Update.

aha
so WINNT 2000 is Win2000
what the latest SP?

The thing is, Windows 9x and NT 4 is not considered a part of the Windows
Family anymore, so 2000/XP/Server 2000 would be considered licensed versions
of Windows that AntiSpyware can run on.

WINNT is actually the architecture:
WINNT 5.0 - 2000
WINNT 5.1 - XP
WINNT 5.2 - Server 2003.

I did what you suggested, but it didn't work. Starting the
program results in a pop-up box (as if the program was
going to start) which disappears after a few seconds.
Period!

In "system information" it has Windows 2000 Professional,
version 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 Build 2195. Does that help?

Then what would be the solution?

OK, I started my computer in safe mode, went to Antispy
Beta, did a scan, which worked. Cleaned up the system.
Then reboot, run antispy program, same problem again, that
is the pop-up window wants to load the program, pop-up
window disappears, that's it. Now what? To scan always
reboot in safe mode?? Seems improbable that that's the
way. Any suggestions or ideas why this is so? Tx for reply.

Hmm - so you can start the program and scan in safe mode, but not in normal
mode? Sounds like a conflict with something that is running in normal mode.

Did we already post that there are about 8 or so virus variants which kill
the Microsoft Antispyware processes? Have you done an antivirus scan with
current definitions while started in safe mode?

I'm not aware of confilcts with normal system drivers that would have this
kind of result--what about other security or antispyware software--anything
present and running?

As Bill Sanderson has written - there is possibility,
that in your system resides something, that prevents MSAS
from normal functioning. You can run for example
Sysinternals Process explorer to find suspected processes
(
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml )
and take a look what starts with the system, using
Sysinternals Autoruns (
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtml
). Take a look at the System and Application logs - maybe
there is an info about some kind of system error, that
prevents MSAS from running.

And the best way again is to start in safe mode and use
all available artillery piece, ups ;-) I mean scan
system with any usefull tool. Tools I usually use are:

Microsoft AntiSpyware :-)
McAfee Stinger http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Spybot Search&Destroy
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
HijackThis http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
CWShredder http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3019.html
Ad-Aware SE Personal
http://www.lavasoft.com/software/adaware/

But there is a lot more like these above.
