You will get a far better "experience" by dumping the horrible web interface
and using a proper news reader instead. You already have one on your
machine - Outlook Express prior to Windows Vista and Windows Mail and News
in Vista.

See this on how to set up Outlook express as your news reader: (I expect
Windows mail and News is horribly similar....)

I have OE 6, can't do it, i typed (e-mail address removed), now does it want my user
name for this forum, then my actual email address, do i enter my password for
log in to msn? something must be wrong, when i did it, it said could not get
access to newsgroups.

The news server for the Microsoft public newsgroups is msnews.microsoft.com
and no user name/password is required. Here are some links to help you with
setting up a newsreader (very easy to do):

i guess installed msnew.microsoft.com from the link i found thru the links
you mentioned, then it asked if i wanted to download the list of news stuff,
i clicked no, now i was able to view the "read the respones to my questions
in the forums" So i guess? i did right, i did not need a list of news
servers, i only want to read the ms groups, so did i do right? I was leary of
the warning not to use real email add so i used another, also the warning
about setting a limit to 1000 i have not done that but I will. is this all ok

Your post is a bit hard to follow, but if you followed the guides at the
links I gave you everything should work. You might want to take the time to
read about the best way to post in order to get good answers. I'll give you
the links again for your convenience. For instance, reading the post above
is difficult because of the lack of capitalization and rather run-on
sentences. I do not say this to hurt your feelings but only to help you get
the assistance you want. Remember, you want to make it easy for people to
help you.

Malke, I am sorry if i ran everything together, i am not a wiz, but i am also
from Pittsburgh, and we do run things together, (i'm not applying this to all
of the pgh people)

What i mean is:

When i installed the msnews, during the process it asked if i wanted to
download the list of items, i said no (i only wanted access to the ms
newsgroups

Next I got a warning of not to use your real email address, so I used
another email address.

Then it asked about setting a limit to 1000, I may or may not have done that
yet.

I am hoping I did this right, now i can open the links in my email.

It's just alittle confusing for me, I was able to open the windows
newgroups, then last week i could not use the links in emails, so someone in
the group told me about the newsgroups, and thats when i started this ms news
access to read the newsgroups.

Now i just opened OE accounts chose newsgroups and what came over was
microsoft news, so I will havve to click on them i assume to see what they
are.

Sorry i am not that educated on all of this.

I never used newsgroups before, or if I did i didn't know about it.

Get aht! My late husband was from Pgh., I've lived in Pgh. with him, we
still have relatives in Pgh., and my son is going to Carnegie Mellon. So
Pgh. is absolutely great as far as I'm concerned. So now go red up yins
house. Or whatever. ;-)

You don't really "install" msnews. You subscribe to newsgroups. And yes,
downloading the list of newsgroups is A Good Thing because it lets you
choose to which newsgroups you want to subscribe. There are a lot of them,
not just this one.
Next I got a warning of not to use your real email address, so I used
another email address.

This is exactly why I gave you all those very useful links. One of the links
explains about munging your email. You definitely want to do this and you
want to make sure you're not using a real domain. After all, if you've made
up an email address steelerfan @aol.com, there probably is some poor soul
at that address (which is why I stuck a space in there to foil spambots).
Then it asked about setting a limit to 1000, I may or may not have done
that yet.

This is just because you don't want to download 1,000 messages for a group.
For very busy groups, you might want to only download 500 messages.
I never used newsgroups before, or if I did i didn't know about it.

So spend a little time reading the information at the links I gave you and
you'll know about it and you won't feel lost. Anyone who can navigate his
way around Pgh. ("you can see where you want to go but you can't get there
from here") can manage newsgroups.

Cheers,

Malke

Thank you, I am working with Bruce now, and no doubt i am driving him crazy.

Anyway to get out of this topic, I now have to red up the haus, do the wosh,
go to estliberty, then to the norside and finally to jaiteagle and the
shoppincener.

PS i lived in oregon for awhile, hope to get back there again

Sorry to be back i downloaded the newgroups and it looked like a bunch of
junk i didn't want to deal with, when i get time i'll look at your links
,thanks again
