I recall a program a while back that would accept calls while you were on
dialup, then display the caller's name and number so you wouldn't miss any
calls while online.

I really need something that will let me not miss calls, but voice mail
costs $7/month (I just don't have it) and a cell phone is ridiculous.

Anybody know of such a program?

Yeah http://www.callwave.com/ used to be free, but no longer. It's
$3.95/month now. If I were still needing such a solution, I think I'd get
one of those hardware solutions to let me pickup and see who it is
momentarily while not disconnecting my from dialup. I've seen those for like
$30.

The Zoom modem company has 2 free programs that permit one phone line to deal
with both the internet and voice calls. One installs in the firmware of their
modems, the other install on windows and may work for modem. The options that
provide:

a) You can disable the software, at will
b) One option automatically disconnects the internet and rings the phone,
whenever a caller rings. A prompt automatically reconnects when, after the
call, if you press any key. You can also just let the phone ring, and have the
answering machine take the call, screening the call that way if you want.
c) The second option rings the modem if someone calls. You then have
perhaps 30 second to disconnect the modem yourself and answer the phone.

Sounds too good to be true. Got a URL?
