A clients computer has a wireless internet card, works from USB. It was running fine at USB2.0 speeds, but I installed another USB card for him so hes can plug more in..now everything runs at USB1.1 speeds. I`m out of ideas as to why its happening...any ideas guys?

So far i`ve tried reinstalling drivers, driver update etc. In device manager the USB stuff comes up with the yellow exclamation mark, but the guy says he cant install drivers through device manager..I cant be there to look over his shoulder or try stuff, so I dont know why.

Any and all ideas welcome!

Kenny :D

When setting it up did you set things up as administrator?
If you go into device manager and click on the icon with yellow exclamation mark, what advice does it give you to help the situation?

Your first mistake was "installing" a USB card ... just get an EXternal Powered Hub, making sure that it is a HighSpeed version.

There are no 'drivers' perse in XP for USB, they are generic. If you have a yellow exclamation mark, what is the error code? Bet if you take that card out you'll also get rid of the error.

When you say USB 2.0 which one, there are three versions. ;)

The PC should have a minimum of 2 USB ports built-in, use one for the wireless modem (you may have to as some will not work otherwise) and the other for the Hub ... you can have up-to 27 single USB ports, however, bare in mind they all need power.

:)

I didnt see the problem first-hand, so I cant comment on errors, sorry.

Full marks to Sir Mucks..the guy took the USB card out and the remaining 2 ports work fine. He also "reinstalled the computer" I`m guessing he means he put in the system restore disk. He seems happy-ish, now he just needs to know if the 2 USB ports are operating at full speed....my first offering would be "to use them and see if it feels right" unless you guys have anything more scientific?

Thanks!

Kenny

I copy-pasted that into an email to him, coz its relevant :) Thanks Mucks. I dont know what speeds he was getting before from his USB, or the effect it had on his interent connection, so by "full-speed" I meant the speed he was getting before, not "full-speed" in marketing terms.

I learned a couple things here, so everyone wins..I think?

Thanks Mucks!
