Hello,

pretty new A7V600 rig with an AMD 2800+ and two 512 sticks of kingston
ValueRam: PC2700

the thing is bombing out on me a couple of times per day. twice today
it has shut down suddenly, taking work with it. this is a graphics
workstation and one of my workers has lost much of her work with these
little glitches.

other times the program just turns off and we find ourselves looking
at the desktop where there WAS our work.

this happens on my machine as well occasionally, but i'm talking about
once every couple of weeks, if even that often. it doens't happen
alot, but neither is it completely unknown.

but when it starts happening a few times a day.....then it is time to
figure out what to do about it, since that kind of thing will set us
back on deadlines and lose money, etc.

while i have no real specific idea what would cause this, it seems
that RAM is the cause of many of the ills in computer society these
days, so i suppose that is where i suspect first.

anybody else having these kinds of problems with Kingston 2700
valueRAM and this MB? the specific RAM is KVR333X64C25/512 if that
helps.

the computer has little else other than a matrox G450 vid card.
WD 80 GB hard drive.

the other problems i have had are that the MB wont detect the floppy,
though i was able to verify its working condition in another computer-
and the SATA drive i bought was never detected by the system. those i
can live without for the moment, but losing work on a consistent basis
is bogus.

any other thoughts?

thanks for any help,

dave

I have been using this board for a while now and have no problems at all. I
use 2 sticks of single sided Kingston ram in slots one and three.
(KVR400X64C25/256).
I have never tried SATA as a lot of blokes seem to have trouble there and
quite a few guys reckon there is bugger all speed diffrence so I can`t
justify the price and drama of SATA.
I hope your operating system is Win XP.
Heat is a common "shut down" problem but that is easy enough to check too.
My motherboard is 33 C and CPU is 53 C but today is a very hot day and the
temp around my desk is 33.5. It is summer here. None the less, my computer
is stable.

You don't give any details as to your power supply.

Is it a good quality one?

I tend to find that the stranger the problem, the more likely it is that its
the power supply.

Hmmmm, OK, i switched the RAM to 1 and 3 rather than 1 and 2, and i
checked the heat on the MB and CPU. the MB is around 40C and the CPU
around 45C. i will continue to watch the MB temp.

the power supply sits above the CPU and has an intake fan right over
it and the case has a fan right by it as well. the processor has the
stock retail fan that came with it. the computer is under a desk, but
not the case is not enclosed at all. airflow would therefore seem
good.

XP pro is the OS.

no shutdowns as of yet today, but the machine hasn't rally been pushed
much since the girl using it has been out much of the day.

i'll post later as an update.
thanks for the input.
