It's gone well beyond printing too yellow now -- I turned on my printer
the other day & got 6 beeps - cartridge not installed. Of course they
are. I repositioned them all & resettled the print heads & was rewarded
with 7 beeps - defective cartridge. So now I've replaced all the
cartridges & am back to 6 beeps. Has anyone ever had the sensor unit on
one of these things go bad? That's my next guess, because no matter
what I do, I can't get the dratted thing off the 6 beeps. Is there a
way to override it?

Thanks!

Yes there are several parts that can fail and cause this problem. In all cases
it is likely cheaper to replace the printer than get it fixed. Sorry for the
bad news.
