Another Idiot locks himself out ....

Hi
I'm sure you are tired of these questions. I foolishly attempted to do the
security thing with permissions etc. I had several DB's on my desktop. Where
it works on the DB I wanted it to, I am also prompted for passwords when I
open any DB's. Then if I use same username and password I get permission
denied. Is there anyway to remove this off my PC, and more importantly if I
transfer infor from laptop to network in office will all DB's require
passwords?

You are joined to your custom workgroup by default. You need to use the
workgroup admin tool to re-join the default "system.mdw".

I have joined the default system.mdw, but I am still asked for a password for
any DB. The passwords allocated only work on the DB I allocated them to. I am
refused access to the others. I clicked the Working Admin Group and joined
and have entered "Owner" as Username. This does not work either.
Apologies for appearing dense... I really should not meddle with things I
don't understand!!!

It sound like you may have modified "system.mdw". Try re-naming and moving
it with Access closed, and then open Access. You don't state which version
you're using but AIUI, for A2k and later, if "system.mdw" can't be found at
start-up, Access will re-create it.

Hi Keith

I'm using Access 2003 on an XP machine. I have searched for system.mdw file
but none is found. If I search using *.mdw I get one file "security.mdw".

I tried renaming Security and whacked it into the recycle bin but was still
asked for sign on details when I re-opened Access.
 
Hi SJL,

The system.mdw can be in different places depending Access version and
Windows OS. Also, depending on the settings on your Folder Options, you may
not be able to *see* the file and therefore not find it when you search for
it.

Open the secured database and bring up VBA Editor by pressing Ctrl-G. In the
immediate window, type in:
? application.DBEngine.SystemDB

This will give you the location of the mdw file in effect for the session.
Whack that one.

Also, I have noticed that because I transfer the info from my Laptop ( Office
2003 on windows XP) and Office ( Office 2003 but Windows 2000) that the
format has reverted to Access 2000. I hope this helps provide a solution.

I have done as you asked, and located the file it was security.mdw created
when I ran the security wizard. When I try to open the secured DB it says
cannot locate security.mdw which is required to open DB. If I try to open any
of the other DB's I am still asked to log on. I have placed security in the
recycle bin. Unfortunately the passwords allocated as admin user do not work,
I can only acces by using a "user" password which does not have admin rights.
 
Problem solved. I created a new Workgroup Information file and that has
solved the problem. Thanks for your help.
