another desperate call for a motherboard add-on

Now I'm peeved. The only places in NA that carry the ASUS AV/S module for
the P4R800-VM and/or A7N8X-VM is Nutrend and Newegg, neither one of which
are willing to ship outside the US. So much for the North American free
trade agreement! Do they think my credit card won't work or something? Do
they think I'll be paying in beef products or softwood lumber?

So, this is another desperate call for someone (hopefully in the Western
States) who has purchased from Newegg in the past and who is wanting to make
a few $$ to help a Canuck out.

Here's how I see it:

$14.99 for the part + $9 shipping to you + $12 shipping to me + $5 for you =
~$41US. This is a significant amount of money (~$50CA) for one lousy piece
of metal, but there are no other options for me and the HTPC I have
assembled. The box is useless to me without the ability to display on my TV.

Please reply to me directly so we can make an arrangement.

Thanks for any kind soul,

Dave

Make an agreement with UPS or some carrier that goes from the US to Canada.
Agree to some pickup location which would normally be one of their depots in
the US. Call your credit card company (CCC) and make this location an
alternate ship-to location in addition to your billing address. I believe
you are allowed only one additional ship-to address. Purchase the item using
the credit card and have it delivered to the designated pickup location.
When Newegg checks with the CCC regarding the billing/shipping address
discrepancy it will be okayed by the CCC. Call the CCC and remove the
alternate ship-to when you receive the goods.

Just a warning, from one who's been there. <g>
UPS will charge a brokerage fee (large, and totally unnecessary) on any
item they deliver to Canada. Never let any US supplier use UPS to Canada.

Agreed.

Use Fedex, their brokerage fee is 1/3 of UPSs, and they will often bill
you later for brokerage and taxes as opposed to demanding COD. It's
worth getting a Fedex account if you do any amount of business with US
suppliers as many who otherwise insist on UPS will ship on your Fedex
account - particularly if you make the call to request pickup.

Of course, if you aren't in a huge rush, USPS Priority is cheaper still
- the "processing fee" is a flat $5, but COD is unavoidable.

Use USPS Air Mail. It's reliable and cheap!

OK, thanks for the tip. I'll see if I can coordinate this with my bank and
FedEx, although I am betting the former will be reluctant to issue a "fake"
US address.

I find US mail to be the best, as there is no brokerage fee at all.
The $5 processing fee is charged, I believe, by Revenue Canada.

Actually the $5.00 is a "handling fee" fee charged by Canada Post if they
have to collect Customs tax for Revenue Canada. I have never used a courier
for shipments from US, but I've heard enough about them not to ever use one.
I've had a lot of items shipped from the US by US Postal Service but from
private individuals. I agree with Don. USPS/Canada Post is definitely the
cheapest way to go.

Also to be kept in mind - any items over approximately $13.00 US if its a
package entering Canada is subject to 15% tax on the value if it needs a
Customs sticker, no matter which way it comes, (plus the $5.00 Canada post
charges for collecting the tax if sent by US postal/Canada Post method.). If
it was marked as "Gift", it can be up to $35.00 US - US dollars are
converted to Canadian dollars and tax is levied on that amount, not the US
figure.

This might be the same item, but I cannot tell from the very short
description, whether it is or not. Currently, the status here
is "backordered", and as these guys are middlemen (they front for
a bunch of small companies and product is drop-shipped), chances
are they won't have a clue when to expect more. Still, it is
a "Canadian" company, as the one purchase I made there stayed
on this side of the border.

Thanks to Frederick P. who has generously offered to buy the module and send
it up to me via USPS. Members of this ng, and most especially Frederick,
have been a great help and I would like to thank everyone for their help on
this one!
