Another AVI file problem

I know there are a lot of similar topics around here, but I haven't found one
that accurately relates to or solves my problem. Anyway, I've captured some
things from a regular digital camera and would like to edit them. I've
imported them into my computer as .avi files, which I have used on Movie
Maker in the past without any problems. They show up in the preview screen,
both visually and with the audio, however if I put them in the timeline they
don't come up, but the audio remains. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I tried downloading another editing program and the same thing
happened, so it might not be Movie Maker after all. The videos play perfectly
in Windows Media Player, so I do not know what the problem can be, and I've
been trying to fix it for quite some time now. Thanks in advance.

Hi Tito --

Can you tell us what codec the AVI files are using, and what software you
used to create them?

You can get the codec information via Windows Media Player --
1. Launch Windows Media Player
2. Choose "File" / "Open" and select the avi file in question.
3. Once the AVI is playing, choose "File" / "Properties" -- The "file" tab
will list the audio and video codecs.

Thanks!

I checked in Windows Media Player under Properties and there was no available
Bit Rate, Audio Codec or Video Codec. Beside each of those headings was just
a dash. The program I used to import the files was Microsoft Camera and
Scanning Wizard.

I should also mention that I tried using an .mpeg file in Windows Movie
Maker as well, but the same problem occurred.

I honestly don't know too much about codecs, but I downloaded GSpot, and
attempted to find which codecs the file(s) are using and/or require. So I'm
sure which ones they require, but I'll try to give you as much information as
possible.

Under "Video" and then "Codec," beside "4CC" it says "mjpg," and beside
"Stat" there are two compatible codecs installed: "AVI Draw" and "MJPEG
Decompressor."

Under "Audio" and then "Codec," beside "Stat" it says "PCM: No Codec
Required." It also says the bitrate is "88 kb/s, monophonic, and the "Fs" is
11024 Hz.

That's the best I could so, sorry if I couldn't be more specific. Any more
instructions might help.
