Annoying Sign

Whenever I boot up an annoying sign comes on screen:-
"System Updating.
Your system configuration is being updated. This may take a few minutes.
Please wait..."
It has stayed on screen for over three hours. Will some kind person or MVP
help me with this, please?
BTW, my apologies if this comes up twice. My first attempt simply
disappeared. David.

You installed some software you didn`t install properly ?
 
Press F8 during black screen startup of XP. This will open the safe mode
menu, and you can choose "Last Known Good Configuration" from the list.
