Annoying ring tone

I had to reinstall my windows XP pro machine. Now I get an anoying ring
every time I close an app or if something else is occuring in backgound. For
instance if I close Visual studio 2005 I,ll get two succesive rings. I can't
figure out how to stop this annoyance.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try this:
Control panel
sounds and audio devices
sounds
in program events look to see if "open program" has a speaker to the
left. Click it. In the window below (sounds) scroll up to (none) and
click it. The speaker should disappear.
In the alternative, look at all the items in the program events window
with speakers to identify which program or function could be causing
this annoyance. Kill the speaker for suspect items until you accomplish
your goal.
However, some programs will cause sounds independent of the windows
sound function and will have to be corrected via the setup/preferences
in that program.
