I've just purchased a new computer with WindowsXP Home Edition. I have
copied onto this Office97 (I know its old, but it does the job fine).
The problem is, now when I create shortcuts on my desktop to Word and
Excel documents, I get a warning everytime I open them that there is
already a copy open on the computer of 'my name', thus, do I want to
create another copy. This is obviously not the case.

Can someone tell me how to fix this. Much appreciated.

I'm no expert but maybe your desktop top shortcuts are set to respond to a
single mouse click and you're double clicking. If that's the case you could
be trying to start it up twice and that's why its moaning.

If you open a folder and look in folder options you can change "Click Items
as Follows" to respond to a double click or a single click.

Hope this may help.

Try the re-register trick.

Re-register by Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver" (no quotes and note the space
before the slash(/) mark.)

You may have to enter your full path to excel.exe....in that case surround
with quotes as in..... "C:\mypath\to Excel\somewhere\excel.exe" /regserver

For Word the re-register command is slightly different

Start>Run "winword.exe /r" (no quotes and note the space before the /
mark). Again, you may have to enter the full path to winword.exe

Also......in Excel be sure Tools>Options>General "ignore other applications"
is NOT checked.
