Annoying Powerpoint problem

T

TheSurgeon

Hi,
When playing a video file (mpg) inserted in a powerpoint presentation,
powerpoint crashes showing the window asking to send an error report.
I am using a Radeon 9600 pro with the latest Omega drivers and MS Office
2003 with SP1.
I have;
tried it with different video files and with different presentations
tried to switch off the hardware acceleration of the graphics card
completely
uninstalled the VGA drivers and installed the previous ones
uninstalled MS Office completely and installed MS Office 2003 without SP1

Still the same problem!

The video files can be played with Windows Media Player without problems.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Thank you very much for the advice,
I don't think that the problem is with the MPEG file (it is a true MPEG
file) because this error occurs with all MPEG files. Another point is that
the same MPEG file and PPT presentation plays without problems on other
computers.
The link contains interesting information. I think my problem is due to some
video/DVD authoring software I installed recently.
I will uninstall them all and try again. I hope that this is reversible.
Formatting the disk and reinstalling XP along with tha other applications
seems impossible!
Thank you again for your help.

yeah it is most likely the video editing app installed the mainconcept mpeg
decoder/filter
it can be found by doing a search for mc*.ax in most cases, rename and
reboot or better yet unregister them
start run
regsvr32 /u (path to file\mc****.ax)

the mvps have a link..Muvee isn't the only app which installs it

I have uninstalled all DVD authoring software but the guilty one probably
left its traces as defective codecs behind.
I made an Internet search for this problem and I found some useful info:
First of all, when Powerpoint opens a multimedia file, it uses the
mplay32.exe (i.e. MCI Media Player not the Windows Media Player). If the
mplay32.exe can play the video but Powerpoint cannot, that means there is a
problem with Powerpoint (which is highly unlikely because I have deinstalled
and reinstalled MS Office 2003 e few times). In my case, mplay32.exe cannot
play the mpeg files and crashes constantly.
Now everything is clear. My problem lies in MCI codecs. Any ideas how to fix
this problem? Thank you very much for your help.

Everything is OK now. The guilty codecs arise from SONY (SoundForge and
Music Studio).
After uninstalling these two programs everything is OK now.
Many thanks...

Very interesting. I have Sound Forge on my system at the office, and it's
not caused me any problems. I haven't tried Music Studio, though...

Thank you for posting your followup information. I'm sure it will help
others in future.

I too have Sound Forge on my systems and have no problems. I don't have Acid
Music Studio.

That means, I can reinstall Sound Forge and check. I will post the results
here.

I have reinstalled Sound Forge 7.0b and experienced the same problem again
which disappeared after uninstallation.

its most likely part of a package
i know sony screenblaster has the mainconcept encoder
remember it the codec/filter not the acutal app
and there are better ways of stopping it besides uninstalling the entire app

I have Sound Forge 7.0, not 7.0b so that might be the difference.

However, I poked around in the Sony site and found some interesting information
that may help others, if not you.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;202070

Now that you have re-installed Sound Forge, a trip to section 3 of
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PowerPoint/multimedia.htm would be a good
idea. Compare the MCI settings on your system to those at the bottom of that
section. They should match exactly. It's okay if you have more items on your
system, but the ones listed on the website *MUST* be on your system and match.
