Annoying Name Format in Select Members

Hello,

In Outlook 2002, the Select Members window presents contact names in a
scroll list in a First Name Last Name format. (The Select Members window
can most easily be seen by creating a distribution list and clicking the
"Select Members..." button). When the names are in this First Last format,
you are unable to use the text entry box labelled "Type Name or ..." by
typing in the first few characters of a contact's last name. This is most
annoying.

I have exhausted all of the obvious places where you have some control over
how names are presented. None of these have made a difference.

I have noticed one other item of interest. If you look at the field titled
Distribution List Name (look under All Fields, All Distribution List Fields)
for a contact you will find an automatically generated version of the
contact name which is in the First Last format. If you modify this to be
"Last, First" and Save/Close the contact and go back to see the name again
you will find that your change is discarded and it is back to "First Last".

It appears as if Outlook is automatically generating the way a name should
be used in the Select Members window as well as in other places. Can this
be changed?

I would like the names to appear in the Select Members window as "Last,
First" so that I can type in the first few characters of a contact's last
name with desirable results.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin.

If you go into the Address Book (not the Contacts folder), are the names
also listed there as First Last, or are they listed Last First?

Yes, names in the Address book are "First Last". I have only one address
book which is an "Outlook Address Book". This address book has three
contact lists contained therein.

This format (First Last) appears to be independent of the settings for
Contacts in Tools/Options/Contact Options. I have played with these
settings repeatedly with no effect on the Address Book listings nor on the
Select Members listings.

Thank you Jocelyn for the information that helped me find a solution. I
hadn't thought this through enough to realize that Address Book ordering
settings would apply to other ordering forms. By searching for "Address
Book Name Order" on Microsoft's support site I found this article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298766&Product=ol2002.
This shows how to reorder the names by selecting the order desired in the
Tools/Email Accounts/View or Change directories...

Kevin.

Glad you got it working :-)
