Steve

I am running a Windows 2000 machine that is not connected
to a lan. I frequently receive pop up alerts from a
variety of vendors via the Messenger Service.

How can I disable this service to prevent these unwanted
intrusions?

Thanks
Steve

Hi,

You need a firewall. Messenger pop-ups themselves aren't malicious, but
should be considered a warning.

There are various free firewalls on the market, which include Zonealarm and
Sygate.

Only reply by newsgroup. If I see an email I didn't ask for, it will be
deleted without reading.

Right click on My Computer. Go to manage. Double Click on
Services and Applications. Double click on Services and
find Messenger. Double click on Messenger and change the
Startup type to Manual or Disabled.---- Case closed.

That's terrible advice. Anyone with Messenger pop-ups NEEDS a firewall. As
we learnt from msblast
