After I installed SP2, I've noticed an annoying beep
sounds frequently when I open a new IE window. It even
sounds when I don't currently have IE open and I go to
open it. The beep is the standard Windows "beep".

Can anyone please tell me why it's doing this and how I
can turn it off? I'm assuming it has something to do with
the new security features... please help.

If you get rid of the beep file it won't be able to do that. I'm not
familiar with XP, but wherever it keeps your sound files like in
C:\Windows\Media ...go there and click some files until you find the one
that annoys you and delete it.

Chris,
Control Panel> Internet Options> Privacy tab> Pop-up blocking section>Settings button> Uncheck, "Play a Sound..."

I've been having the same problem. Whenever I open a new IE browser
winodw, windows plays the sound called "Windows XP ding." I looked up what
the event associated with this sound in the control panel and it's just
called a "default beep."
I currently have SP2 installed with the google toolbar. I told both
programs to NOT play a sound when a popup is blocked but the sound still
plays when I open a new browser window. Thanks in advance for the help.....

I have the same problem. I have SP2 installed along with the Google
toolbar. I have disabled both IE and google to NOT make a sound when they
block popups but the dings continue when I open a new IE window. I looked up
what event was associated with the sound in the control panel. All it says
is that the "default beep" will play the "Windows XP ding" sound file.

What else could I/we try?

You should only use one pop-up blocker - either Google or Windows, they
could be clashing with each other if you have both switched on.

Hi mwstretch :-)

Try doing a search and find the .wav file associated with that event and
just rename it. That should keep it quiet. <g>

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan :)
