Hi,
I needed this so much! I always wanted to read news from several servers in
a network with one external connection. I searched and I couldn't find
anything similar to what I wanted(!), so I though I could write it myself.
This program is a true NNTP Proxy, very similar to POP3 proxy (where the
idea came from). All other proxies I have found are in fact only a TCP
mapping; this means either to use only one news server or to define a
mapping for each server you want to reach. Of course this means to use a
different port for each mapping; and because the maintainance must be done
on the local server, one needs always to ask a network administrator for a
change.
This program is completely different: the target server (and port) are
extracted from the user name sent as authentication. You need to set your
news client to use authentication, then set your user name as
"user#serverort". If your server doesn't require authentication, leave the
user part empty (like "#server").
Advantages:
- it works as a service on Windows NT, and as a simple application in
Win9x/ME.
- after setting up (which usually means just to start it once), there is
no need for anything else on the server/proxy machine.
- virtually unlimited target servers.
- no proxy maintenance needed.
I don't earn money with it (yet), so I don't have a good download location.
