The author here does not note that this app installs the Mysearch
toolbar - on the main website for mgshareware he/she does note pretty
clearly that it will install this toolbar, and explains what it does
and says it is *not* spyware.

Some other spyware sites disagree however, and there seems to be a lot
of sites offering removal tools for this toolbar and claim it is
parasitic, pointing searches towards particular companies products.

I don;t know the answer to this, but thought I should point this out
to others - recommend that anyone who is interested in this programme
does their own research *prior* to installing Freenote and this
toolbar.

My own opinion ? If this toolbar is spyware free, then why bundle it
with all mgshareware programmes ? If I want a toolbar, i will get one
- don't like it forced upon me.........

cheers

PS - I have manually fixed the follow up here - was set to reply to
alt.comp.shareware for some reason...........

ps - a quick check shows adaware have removed the toolbar from their
database - looks like it may be clean ?

If so, apologies to mgshareware on this issue - other concerns remain
tho....

Me, too.

I had a look because I'm still looking for a sticky that does NOTHING else
(well,, ok rollup is nice); no alarms, organisers bells or whistles, funny
how hard it is to find a simple straightforward tool....

Sorry, rant over, I agree entirely.

Spybot is weird about this - here's what they say

Company My search
Aliases
URLs Product URL (http://www.mysearch.com/)
Functionality IE search toolbar
Description The small privacy policy seems to be not quite right.
For using Google or Altavista as a search engine, this toolbar still
routes the searches over their own site. and why does every file that
the page requests need to set a cookie that includes the users IP
address?
Privacy The My Search site and your My Search Bar protect your
privacy. My Search does not track your searches or where you go on the
Web. The My Search Bar does not contain any type of ad software to
present you with ads while you are on the Internet. Simply put, the My
Search site and your My Search Bar provide you with the best search
resources on the Web, with no strings attached.

In essence, privacy policy not right, some concerns about cookies and
traffic, yet give it a glowing reference - the "best search engine "
??

weird

Thanks to all for the heads up...... in the words of the mortal EP Funk; "We
don't need no stinkin' spyware."

You may want to take a look at Sheer Notes at
<http://www.theabsolute.net/sware/#sheernotes>

It's simplicity itself, and superfast.

Alastair,

first of all I want to underline that the MySearch searchbar
installation is opt-in: the setup program asks whether you want to
install it or not. You can also uninstall the toolbar without
uninstalling FreeNote if you want.

Anyway, as you noticed, ADAware (and many other spyware/adware
detection tools) does no more consider MySearch as spyware.
Read this for getting details:

Now about your question: if it is not Spyware why they bundle it?
It's easy: they help us in financing product developing since we share
click-through revenue on searches made via the toolbar.
This means that we are not insterested in just installing the toolbar
on your PC, we need you WANT it, LIKE it and USE it.
If you don't, we prefear you don't even install it.

Hope this help you understand what we are trying to do: we are trying
to distribute free software and ....survive, paying our mortgage, sons
school, and so on.... It's not easy. Beleive me.

Thanks - I may be an old cynic, but it is really your last two words
which for me are the crux here - I need to believe you (and not you
personally -your response is detailed and fair - so i do believe and
trust you personally)

But...

You say they help you financially - why would they give you money if
there programme does not supply ads or collect information useful to
them in some way - even spybot said that the toolbar routes searches
through the toolbar site rather than directly through google.

Probably am a bit cynical - maybe they are cool, but then we know what
a coolwebsearch does for your PC ?

Glad to hear that the install is not mandatory tho - thanks
