I can't get animated objects to work after downloading them from clip arts on microsoft site. I am using Office 97. What can I do to fix this? Thanks

If they are animated GIF's, PowerPoint 97 doesn't support them. You would
need to convert them to AVI's and then insert them as Movies. See

Simply, PowerPoint 97 does not support motion graphic files.

But wait, there's more ....

If you upgrade to PowerPoint 2000 or newer, there is a full range of motion
graphics support. All the little aliens will jump around the projection
screen merrily.

If upgrading is not an option, then you can convert the motion graphic files
(gif's and their like) to avi movies. The movie files are supported* by
PowerPoint 97. Why the star? Well, while movies are supported, not all the
decompression codecs are included with each system. So you may be able to
see aliens jump on your screen, but not your friend's. At least he won't
see them until he gets the correct codec loaded on his system.

This link will explain a little more about codecs:

This link will help you understand more about gifs and PowerPoint 97:

There are also issues with looping the avi movie file as a gif animation
would loop.
This link will show you how to convert to avi files:
