Once I have brought an object into a slide [say fly in
from the right] how do I make that object go away or fly
out of the slide to the left?

You should be able to set entrance and exit conditions.
Under Slide Show pick the Custom Animation option. Select
the item you want to animate and then click Add Effect.
From here you can set the entrance and exit condition.

Alan,
DeeDee's answer will help if you have PowerPoint 2002 or later. If you have
one of the earlier versions, let us know and someone will post the old way
to fake it.

You have it flying in because you did an entrance
animation. To fly out you need to apply an exit
animation. You can activate it either by a click or with
previous. Hope this helps
