Lee,

You will probably have to "un-group" the chart to be able to animate it.

The ungroup option is on the Draw menu (bottom left)

You then should probably group together each part you want to animate

It depends on which version you are using. (Always state that.)

In version 2002, you can use the normal PPT tools to animate an Excel chart
if you paste the chart from Excel (Excel object) or insert a new Excel chart
object.

In version 2000, you can use the normal PPT tools to animate an Excel chart
if you insert a new Excel chart object.

In version 97, you cannot use the normal PPT tools to animate any Excel
chart, short of converting it to another type of object such as a drawing by
ungrouping it.
 
In version 2002, you can use the normal PPT tools to animate an Excel
chart
if you paste the chart from Excel (Excel object) or insert a new Excel chart
object.
Via the "custom animation" > "effect options" > "chart animation" > "by
category" ?
