Animation problems on file created in PP200 & run on 2002 or 2003

Greetings

I develop PowerPoint based lesson plans for firefighter/emergency responder training. I have continued to design my programs in PP 2000 even after 2002 and 2003 were released in order to avoid any animation compatiblity issues with customers running the older versions (97 and 2000).

The problem I have run into now is that it would appear there are some backwards compatibility issues with PP 2002 & 2003. Files that run fine on 97 and 2000 are having problems with the animations. These include breaking up text lines that are supposed to appear in one shot into multiple sections, causing portions of the sentence to appear at different times. Also, in 2003 some text lines have the animation doubled so that it appears as designed, disappears and then reappears again

Has anyone had any problems similar to this? I have also entertained the thought that the files may have been corrupted somehow. If so, I would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix them.

Much of the "problem" is most likely 2002-2003 interpreting your animations.
I ran into similar situations before moving to PPT 2002. One solution would
be to design in 2002-2003, but not use any of the new animations (you can
actually turn them off to allow only 2000 animations). This way you know all
would work in all versions. The other option would be to modify your
animations and then preview in 2002-2003 or event the 2003 viewer to assure
they work as planned.

If you would like additional trouble shooting, list off the exact animation
that is causing a display problem in 2002/3 and then maybe we can be of
further assistance.

Troy,

Thank you for the information. I have already opened up the files in PP 2002 and fixed the animation issues and it worked fine. I then when to run it on PP 2003 and had further problems. I fixed them in PP 2003 and saved them. They now work on 97, 2000, 2002 and 2003. The problem I was concerned with was how to prevent this from occuring in the future with newer versions of PowerPoint. Once these files are out to my customers it is a concern that they will not be able to run them on newer versions of the software.

Also, the part I thought was odd was that there was no rhyme or reason to the problem. Some of the files had no issues while others had quite a few. There wasn't even a pattern to which animations were having problems. Lastly, I took one of the original PP 2000 files and ran it in PP 2003 with no difficulty. The same file had numerous problems in PP 2002 and when fixed and saved in 2002 caused problems in 2003 that didn't exsist with the original file.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again,

Jason

Hi There,

From the www.pptfaq.com web site:

PowerPoint 2002 (XP) uses an entirely new animation system which has
not been implemented in any other version of PowerPoint on Mac or
Windows. Don't use the new animations in PowerPoint 2002 (XP) if you
plan to view the presentation on the Mac, in any older version of
PowerPoint for Windows, or in any of the free viewers on either
platform.

If you know your PowerPoint 2002 presentation will be shown in any
other version of PowerPoint or one of the viewers, choose Tools,
Options from the menu bar, click the Edit tab, then put a checkmark in
each of the three boxes listed under "Disable new features". That way
you won't be able to accidentally use any features that won't work in
other versions.

Why don't you try and save the files in 2002/2003 after you correct the
animations. Then go for backward compatibility.

You can also visit the site for info about fixing corrupted
presentations.

Glenna
