Posting a question for a friend who doesn't use newsgroups:

*---------------*

My son's 3-D rendering program is called blender. He says it's a 3-D
animation engine that then has a rendering portion. He makes torches
that ignite and Christmas trees, etc. He seems to be especially
interested in how light reflects off of different surface textures.

What's the next level up?

*---------------*

Thanks.

First I'd tell your friend to "google-it" (or at least try google
groups) but that would be rude. On the other hand there was one I
"think" is called "Genesis" or something like that, for older machines
tho, goes no higher than DirectX 5 IIRC. Unfortunately I no longer have
the link but you can try here -

I googled it but you basically get a lot of manufacturer's web sites and
not a lot of people's opinions and recommendations.

He might like to try 3d canvas http://www.amabilis.com/
Not sure whether it's a 'level up' or a lateral shift, but it's an
interesting, not-too-difficult program, with some good tutorials on the
home site.

how about maya personal edition, Maya personal now
available for free

"Alias has now made a version of Maya Personal Learning Edition
available for free on both the Mac and PC.

you generally need 3D modelling software to create any decent models for
use in your games or otherwise, and Maya is usually the recommended
choice."
