I tried placed an amimated graphic (.avi) file into a slide. It plays back on my computer, but not on anyone else's in my organization. Does PPt accept .avi files? Are my collegues missing any software which plays back a presentation containig a graphic of .avi type?

When you sent the PowerPoint file, did you send the AVI as well? If not, it
has no chance of playing. You might also want to check out this PPT FAQ
entry, so that when you do send the AVI it will have a better chance of
still being linked on the other system:

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

It sounds like your *.AVI files are linked (not embedded). PowerPoint will
only embed *.WAV media files that were less than the size indicated in the
General tab of the Tools -> Options dialog at the time the sound is
inserted. Other types of sounds and movies will always be linked.
PowerPoint does not include supporting (or linked) content for a
presentation when you send a presentation via e-mail.

There are a variety of workarounds including:

* Pack and Go (or Package for CD) to create a "portable" set of files to
send (not using the Send command in PowerPoint).
* Saving as HTML and posting to a location e-mail recipients can access and
then just sending them the address of the web page for the presentation.
* Saving as MHTML (Single File Web Page) and sending the resulting file in
e-mail.

Of course, If you (or anyone else reading this message) feel strongly that
the "Send to ->Mail Recipient" command should include option(s) which make
it possible for recipients to see or receive the supporting/linked content,
don't forget to send your feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible. Each submission should be
a single suggestion (not a list of suggestions).
