Animated Gif files

Why doesn't an animated gif file play within my presentation. Is there a
setting I need to do. I used to be able to view them but now I can't since I
updated my ssytem.

Which version of PPT?

Also, you have to be in show view for the GIFs to play. They don't play in
Normal editing view.
 
version 2003 and yes I know it needs to be in slide show
