Hello,
For me the best option ((and cheapest because I already had the equipment) was
to plug the SVHS output from my analog into my DV camera and work from there.
If you do not have a DV camera, get a mate who has
) for the cheapest
solution. The results for me were as good as the original tape. I saw no
additional loss of quality doing it that way.
A second and quite useful option is to buy a DVD Recorder/encoder. I have a
stand alone unit that also has a TV tuner built into it. It also has Video in
S-VHS in and out etc.....When used the machine creates a DVD with menus etc.
Whilst not a perfect solution...it gets you pretty close and also gives the
ability to record from a satellite dish or any other video source. Programs
like Nero 6 Reloaded can take the disk produced and convert it to a medium
usable in Movie Maker or can edit the video directly
Next option (going down in usefulness) would be to purchase a dedicated Analog
to DV converter...with these you get what you pay for. In addition and even
though the USA will drag its heels in this respect VHS is dead (Long live VHS)
In the UK the largest retail outlet, the Dixon's group, have withdrawn all VHS
tape systems from their shelves stating they are no longer worth selling and do
not earn the cost of the shelf space. A few days later the two top
supermarkets, Tesco and Sainsburys also withdrew them....I am told that similar
events are occurring across Europe. I am trying to find a local shop that still
has one so that I can buy and put away for the future...no luck as yet
Hope this helps a little...
