Analog Video Capture

I have a Sony CCD TR516 analog camera and a Sony VAIO RS-430G computer. I have connected the two with a RCA cable. I use the white and yellow on the camera and white, yellow and red on the computer. I have tried plugging into both the front and rear jacks on the computer. I can capture the video in Click to DVD but not Movie Maker. Do I need something else hooked up or installed to make this work?? I bought this computer from Circuit City and was assured that I could easily make DVD's from my video camera...I guess one persons opinion of easy is another persons insanity! HELP!!!

Your last sentence is so true. The only way to get the video in at present
is to use the click to dvd as you are.
If you want better quality and ease of use then you'll need to spend some
money on a proper analogue to digital convertor, This will import the signal
to the pc as a dv-avi file which will go in to MM and can be editied with
ease. You then need to export this back out of MM again as a dv-avi file and
use click to dvd or another dvd authoring app to finally make your dvd.
See here for reviews on canopus and miglia products for doing this.

Also have a read of www.papajohn.org where there is a section on analogue
capturing.

Graham,
Thank you so much for your response. Is there no way to capture it in another program, save as a MM compatible format then import into MM? I cringe at the thought of spending another $200+ after spending $2500 on a computer that was supposed to "just plug it in" to make videos, but if I have to, I guess that is the only option...Thanks again!

Julie,
I've never used click to dvd, so am not quite sure of the format it ends up
in. Most internal analogue capture devices end up making there own format,
pinnacle makes a mjpeg video. Does the manual or help file tell you the
format of your finished file? If so, let me know, I may be able to find
something to convert it. Bear in mind that converting files this way does
lower the quality a little, but then it depends on what you are expecting as
to what is acceptable to you.
The cheaper devices can often suffer from video/audio sync problems, so if I
were to suggest something easy to set-up, easy to use and gives great
results I'd go for one of the canopus devices.
Also, just to set you right up for the night, (well it's night her in UK I
might just be ruining your whole day!!!) dvd making is not quite as simple
as everyone makes out. If you are lucky it will go well and out comes a disc
that will play on your dvd player. If it doesn't the problems are many...
your dvd player may not play the discs you buy, because they are the wrong
sort/make/quality/burnt at the wrong bitrate. On the plus side, there's
loads of us here to help, so don't get to despondant :)

Julie,

There are some notes on the DVD Software > Sony Click to DVD page of my site
that might help.
