Specs:
A8N-VM CSM (using onboard video)
1 GB (2x512) Patriot Signature PC3200
Antec NeoHE 430W PS
Hitachi T7K250 SATA II
floppy, CD-ROM, etc.

This system boots fine with a PATA drive, but when I connect the Hitachi, it
shuts down immediately after power up. Could this be a PS problem? The only
other one I have is a old 300W I'll swap in tomorrow. Til then, has anyone
else seen this symptom? TIA.

We are a dealer and have had no problems using SATA drives
on that motherboard. We have seen similiar problems with
bad hard drives and cables. Have you tried swapping?

It is an Antec. Go with your hunch and try the other supply.

Am doing a PS swap today, and will also try the drive in another system to
see if is bad. Thanks.

Also, try moving SATA cable to another connector and try a different cable
as well.

Well, I guess that could be it except every other Antec supply I've used has
worked flawlessly. If, however, it does prove to be a faulty PS, I'll alert
the masses.

And make sure that the boot order in the BIOS is correct. If it's
not, I'd expect that you'd at least get a "no system disk" error, but
it's worth looking at.
Antec is a very reliable manufacturer. I swear by them. I have Antec
cases AND PSUs for all my rigs, but they did produce some BAD LOTS of
Neo PSUs recently. You can get facts about that by Googling the
topic. Let us know if switching the PSU cures your problem.

See here for a discussion of the issues when matching A8N motherboards
and the Antec Neo HE PSU

Yep, it was the PSU. I put in a SmartPower 400W and everything worked as one
would hope. I was warned about the NeoHE and waved it off. Live and
learn.....
