While attempting to insert a wav file into a PP presentation I noticed that when I browse for 'other sound' the wav file does not appear in folder list, but it does appear when using Windows Explorer. Additionally, there are several folders that I deleted that do not appear in Windows Explorer, but do appear, like ghosts, in the PP file listings. My understanding is that PP uses Explorer, so I can't figure out where the problem lies. Neither could a wonderful lady in the microsoft.public.powerpoint newsgroup, where we've spent the past two days trying to figure this one out.
This is what I have tried to do to fix the problem:
1. List *.*; the wav does not appear
2. Checked folder view options; allowed all files to be shown
3. Renamed the file
4. Renamed and recreated the PPT10.pcb file in PP
5. Ran Detect & Repair in PP - did receive error 1919 involving two ODBC statements that could be missing from the registry - attempted fix using MS Article #324520, but no success)
6. Cleaned up drive and defragged
7. Removed and reinstalled Office XP
8. Purchased and ran a registry repair program (Registry First Aid); did not fix the problem.
9. Ran sfc /scannow; did not fix the problem
So now I'm wondering if I should try uninstalling XP SP2, or, worse, installing XP anew. In the back of my mind, I'm thinking there's some kind of file allocation problem or something.
We are totally baffled by this problem and would appreciate any ideas anyone may have.
