An UPDATE invalidates my key? Requires new activation key?

I updated my computer form the update panel, since there was a suggested
update (for the nvidia driver). I did so.

Now, I get the message that I need to activate my copy of VIsta, or it will
expire in 3 days.

I tried to activate online, and the message tells me that the key is already
in use, and that I need a new key.

This is UNACCEPTABLE!
All I did was to install an updaet that I was notified about, and then the
system does not accept my original key!

What should I do? (Yes, one good choice would be to go back to XP, which
works fine, but I did invest in Vista... .)

yes, thanks, that is what I did, but I wasted a bunch of time for what is in
essence a bug. I did not change ANY hardware, yet needed to talk with a
human in order to continue to use my valid license. While I suppport active
measures taken to protect intellectual property, the fact that a false notice
like this is triggered means that MSFT needs to look into correcting the
relevant algorithms.

This is the same problem I just had. There was an update on WU for nForce4
Serial ATA controller and after I installed it Windows said I had to
reactivate because my hardware had changed. Online activation would fail and
I had to call the phone activation.

Hardware change?

All I did was install a driver update for my hardware not change any
hardware and the driver update came from WU.

Same here.

After updating the nforce4 driver and restarting, windows became deactivated.

Sorry for the double post, forgot to mention a couple of stuff.

I got the error that my key is "in use". This is indeed totally
unacceptable, and whats more, the update was released through Microsoft's
windows update!

I still havent tried reactivating through phone, will do so soon.

Was this an update from Windows Update or from the Nvidia site ? I ask
because I have an NForce 4 MB and have not seen an update on the Windows
Update site.
Thanks,
Bob

Count me as another person frustrated with the same problem. It seems to me
that nothing applied via Windows Update should cause deactivation.

I see this as an "additional update" in windows update from MS.
I'm not installing yet due to others' problems with it even though it will
most likely "fix" my hd not being recognized properly and acting sluggishly
when transferring files from another pc.

To those that have reactivated etc--did this update fix anything for anyone
btw?

Went forward and installed this with no "re-activation" needed in my case.
It seemed to clean up all the listings in device manager under IDE/ATApi etc.

Same for me. I've actually just posted myself about this in the Windows
Update group, before I found this topic.

Anyway, phoned up, got through to the human (the automated activation was
talking about XP, which confused me a lot, as this was not even an upgrade
from XP...), and I told them Win Update told me there was a hardware change.
She obviously didn't know what I was talking about, but gave me the new code
to enter, and I'm back up and running.

It's something MSoft need to look at because I don't want it to happen again!

Another disatisfied customer!!! Not only has the Vista 'Wow' experience been
rather lacking, but after installing a new graphics card to take advantage of
DirectX 10, windows as become deactivated.

It has taken windows nearly three days to realise the change has occurred,
but nonetheless I now have to ring someone in another country who barely
understands the system just so I can continue to use a product which I have
legal rights to use.

Give me back XP, or even better Linux.

Welcome to Microsoft!

Add Me to that list also...

However mine was not an update through the windows update, but I did install
an updated ForceWare Driver for my nVidia GeForce 7 Series card and installed
My MS Keyboard 7000 Series (w/Bluetooth).

Now I need to call and do a telephone re-activation... I don't understand
how these things cause it... but My new HP 8120N is only 2 days old and I
still haven't had a chance to enjoy it with these stupid activation issues I
am having on it!

They really need to look at the activation wizard when it relates to drivers
and components... I mean a driver is not changing hardware, it is updating
the way it talks to it! If the vendor determines a better way to recognize
the card for speed, performance or what not that shouldn't cause a
re-activation requirement with a telephone call!

I'm afraid when I need to upgrade my 7 Series card to an 8 or greater! I
hope that microsoft realizes this issue and distributes a fix for the
activation wizard in Vista to be a little kinder!
