I have always been able to empty my deleted items. As of today, my deleted
items will not delete and I received "an unknown error has occured". Why
would this suddenly happen? Strange! I have changed nothing.
Does anyone have an answer?

A very common occurrence, which is readily discovered by
reading the other posts in this newsgroup.

Hi Pam
the same error occured in the box "Incoming Post" - no chance to delete this
item?

Try using shortcut keys
I found that by keying "ALT' then "E" then "Y" it would delete each message
one by one.

I think what's happening is that the database is getting it's messages
confused. When you first started having the problem did you notice that it
looked as if the computer was actually deleting the messages, but they still
appeared in the deleted items folder? According to the database, the deleted
items folder is empty. What we're having a problem is with clearing out the
messages names from the folder. I believe that is why we're getting the
'unknown error' message. The computer doesn't see that WE can still see the
message headers in the folder.

Try what I've suggested. Since I did the shortcut keys, I've not had anymore
problems with doing a MASS delete of my deleted items folder.
Everything works as it should now.

Let me know if this works for you.

Take care,

Pamela

I think what's happening is an anti-virus set to scan email. That function
adds no protection and screws up mail programs.
