Are you concerned about cost?

BigS:

For "last generation" stuff, the INTEL D845pesvl / [email protected] combo and a
512 stick of DDR333 RAM performs without exception. Bulletproof, and a
great deal too.

For a bit more, the D865 will give you an 800mhz fsb. Still
dirt cheap and solid and will "out-run" any network and almost any proggie.

Hi,

'old computer'

Is this old computer in an ATX case and how big is the power supply (in
watts)?

What parts do you expect to use from this old machine in your upgrade?
If the computer is more than 3 or so years old it may be using a 2 X AGP
card, which may not even fit into a new mb at this point.
Essentially, please give some more details as what you expect to be able to
use already, but let folks know what you already have.

Not too much, I am not the one paying, but I won't recommend something
that we do not need.

I've built a couple of nforce2-400s (aopen ak79d, biostar m7ncd) recently
with AMD XP2500 cpus. Both are stable, fast and cheap. The biostar cost
$53 at newegg, while the retail 2500+ was $90. I used 2x256mb Mushkin
pc3200 ram at $38 stick. The following review convinced me that the
nforce2-400 and xp2500 have about the best price/performance right now:

Biostar M7NCD Pro (or M7NCG for built-in graphics)
AMD Athlon XP Barton 2500+ or faster
Any DDR RAM stick(s)

Shuttle also makes a mobo equivalent to the above Biostar that is
supposed to be good.

See the mobo reviews at newegg.com. Sort by Votes to find the most
popular mobos.

I don't know if that's a good strategy. The newegg customers are wild about
some really questionable components, sometimes. :) -Dave
