When I try to delete a table in Access I frequently encounter an error
message telling me that the item is in use and I will have to eliminate that
use. There is never a message that tells what the item is. As an expediant
whenever I encounter such a problem, I've been shutting down Access
completely then reopening it and proceeding on my way. Now I've encountered
a similar message, this time telling me that if I proceed I won't be able to
resave it. What's going on? How do I find the item thats been tied up?

You are probably locking the file somehow, and shutting it down is clearing
the locks. The second message is normal. It is telling you that once you
delete the data, or the table, it's gone, you can't get it back. (Under
certain very narrow circumstances you can get a table back though).
