An intresting installation error!

I was going through the install process, and everything seemed to be going
smoothly.

Eventually I got to the part where you add your username. This I did, and I
also added a password - because this is recommended - plus my help phrase.

I went through the various options until I got to the screen where Vista is
checking your computers performance.

The progress bar got to about a 1/4 of the way through when everything
froze. I waited for a while just in case it was doing something in the
background. However there was no disk activity at all, and after about
fifteen minutes I rebooted the computer.

It went to the add a user screen, but would not allow me to use the name I
had tried before, so I typed in a different name and the computer booted up,
but this time without going to the checking computer performance screen. The
desktop came up and I was in.

The username that I had originally entered was there, so I logged in under
that name.

But I did not have the Aero interface, probably due to the fact that the
computer had not seen my graphics card before it froze. It was no big
problem, and I had my system looking good within a couple of minutes.

But there were other things that were not quite right. When opening an
explorer window none of the links were showing on the left-hand side.

I deleted the second user name, and then re-booted the computer.

Everything seemed to be ok and then I began installing some software. But
another problem occurred. The computer was trying to install it under the
user that I had deleted!

At this point I decided to start again with another clean install. Guess
what? Exactly the same thing happened.

I tried a third time - only this time I did not supply a password for my
username. Success!

Everything went smoothly.

I have sent this feedback to Microsoft, but was curious as to whether or not
anyone else had a similar issue?

Thanks,
Graham.

Graham,

Yes, I experienced the very same issue while installing Vista Ultimate. I
setup the initial user and then it ran a performance check. It got nearly
50% through the performance check when the screen when blank and my
workstation rebooted. After the reboot it came to the screen asking to again
setup the primary user of the system. I had to enter a different user name
and it let me in. I on the other hand was able to activate Windows Aero
without any problems. So far the new shell is running great and I was able
to install Visual Studio 2005 Professional without any problems. I don't
know if the problem we experienced is hardware related. I'm running a Dell
Precision 650, 1 GB RAM, 2 X 2.4 Ghz Xeon's, and the ATI Fire GL1 video card.
Other than that "hick-up" all it well.

Hello Ryan.

Your hardware is very different to mine.

I have a home-built system - Gigabyte board, AMD 64 3000+, 1 gb ram,
XFXForce 7300GS graphics card and 2x120gb Seagate drives.

After I reinstalled and left out the user password everything was ok. I
added a password after the installation - no problems.

Graham.
