I have just started getting an AMI bios message stating I should back up my
second hard drive because of possible imminent failure. I have copied
everything to cd ..installed a software program (active ?) that gives me a
"spin up retry problem" message ......do I kiss the drive goodbye (maxtor
30g 7200rpm) or is there anything that can be done? My guess is that
problem is physical....

Yeah, most likely with a symptom like that.

It can be an inadequate power supply in theory, but thats only worth
considering if its quite puny like say 150W with the drives you are using.

That is a SMART error from the HD controller. If it's under warranty it
can be replaced.

This type of problem usually gets worse over time. Convert the drive
into a paperweight.
