A mate of mine was wondering how feasible this would be, so I said I would ask.....

"I've been thinking about picking up a new laptop and with the Dollar falling like a one legged drunk importing is naturally enticing. Anyone here had any experience with imports. The most important considerations for me are warranty and any potential tariffs or legal nonsense. Obviously how easy it is to get hold of British power cables is also a consideration.

If anyone has any recommendations, suppliers I'd also be grateful."

That's his question, over to you.....

First off, you're going to want to run a machine at 240 volts that was made to run on 110 volts. This can be done by either:

Hoping the machine has a multi voltage option. If it does, switch voltage to 240V then purchase UK PSU/Adapter. This will typically cost £45.00/£60.00 if there is one available. Check first.

Or you can buy a 240V to 110V mains adapter with an American style plug on the 110V side. This limits the laptop to having to lug the transformer around with it.

The laptop will have an American keyboard layout, not UK.

I don't know of any USA suppliers willing to ship to the UK.

If you can find a private individual you can trust who's willing to ship you an American laptop, shipping will be around £20.00. You will have to find a way to pay them. When I've done this I've always posted the sender dollar bills, which is a little risky.

If the parcel is marked 'gift' it may escape Customs inspection and therefore will attract no import tax.

If Customs inspect it however, expect to pay import duty and VAT on the item, thus making any saving negligible.

Your best bet is to pick one up whilst visiting the States.

I am from U. S. I know that i send one American laptop (dell brand) to my sister in NEPAL. I didn't had to do anything with power supply. (power supply is same as in Britain)You don't need to buy anything for converting power. Make sure they send you the power cable with the laptop (It comes with it anyway). Keyboard will be american layout. I don't know but is there any difference in layout? Paymant if i am not wrong must be in $.

You can go online and will be able to find dealer that will ship to you. Let me know if you need any help finding a dealer.

I've had stuff sent from suppliers in the USA . paid either with Pay-Pal , Moneybookers or Credit Card . Some stuff came through with no import tax and some with, either way all the items I've bought have been cheaper than I could source in the UK at the time . :D
