AMD64 - How good are they?

I'll be replacing my P4 1.6 system soon,and been curious about AMD's new 64
models.Are they that much better,will the 64 bit compatibility be that much
of a factor anytime soon?Which AMD cpu would be comparable to a P4 3.0 with
hyperthreading?I'm looking for something that would be good for gaming and
internet use mainly,and not become obsolete in a year.
