Hi
Can someone help me as to which cpu to pick which is the best performing in
the 939 pin range, is it FX 51 or similar?
I want to do video editing and will need plenty of grunt so what would be
the best combo?
PSU.....500w?
MEMORY........2GB? type?
Is cooling a massive factor with these chips? Will water cooling be better
or refrigderated case?
basically I want stacks of explosive power that will last me a while.
Cheers

The fastest single processor A64 is the FX55 but you would be crazy to buy
one. There is a huge price spike after the 3500+, the 3500 is $265 the
FX55 is $880. The performance difference is only about 20% which hardly
justifies the price difference. If you are looking for the highest
performance system you are much better off with a dual Opteron. Get an
Nforce Pro based dual Opteron system. I'd wait a couple of weeks, AMD is
releasing the latest stepping of the Opteron next week (E step). It brings
the hypertransport bus on the Opterons upto 1GHz (The Athlon 64s are
alreasy at 1GHz) and adds SSE3 instructions.

You don't need exotic cooling for any of the Athlon 64s or Opterons. You
can use the stock coolers if you want, or for a few dollars more you can
get something like a Thermaltake cooler that will do a little better. You
absolutely don't want to waste money on water cooling, it costs more than
a second processor.

If money isn't an object.... Forget all about a uniprocessor solution and
start thinking of a quad Operon 848's...

You'll never, ever lug down a box with 4 way opterons..

Good advice..look into A64 3000+ with dual memory..939
motherboards...price drop announced today for amd chips so wait a bit
and check prices out.take your time in getting a new computer. good luck

I believe the FX-55 is now available.

Dual Opteron (socket 940) 250 or 252 would be better; dual Xeon would be better
yet for video rendering.

PSU.....500w?
Fine.

MEMORY........2GB? type?

Might do fine with 1 GB with a single CPU, depending on what you're running; 2
GB for a dual setup. Type depends on the motherboard; use what it specifies.

Water cooling is overkill in most cases. If you decide to overclock, though,
all bets are off...
