AMD server chip price cuts before September 25, 2005?

Hi,

I'm in the market for an 8-way server for work, and am leaning towards
buying one from pcforeveryone.com, specifically their "ThinkMate 4U
Quad Opteron 8x Hotswap SATA" model with 4 dual-core Opteron 865 chips.
I can pick up one of these with oodles of RAM and disk for $13K or so.

I work for the (US) Federal Govt and need to initiate this purchase
before the end of our fiscal year, on September 30th. What is the
likelyhood that AMD will either drop their prices on 865 chips, or
introduce a faster chip at the same price, before September 25th, 2005?
There were some other server chip price cuts in early August, but not
these.

I'm wondering if there are some patterns to these price cuts ...

Thanks,

Jonathan

If you look here http://freespace.virgin.net/m.warner/CPUPricesAMD.htm and
click through for Intel prices, there doesn't appear to be much movement in
prices in that sector - they have held steady for months. If Intel drops
prices of Xeons, possibly after IDF, you might see AMD follow but chances
look slim to me.

i doubt it, opterons are too good and xeons are even less competative
than the pentium4, on the plus side your buying a VERY fast 8core rig
which should still have a fair upgrade path

Latest word from The Inquirer is that there's a new set of Opteron
price cuts planned to go into effect September 1. See
