Hello
Today I installed a new CPU fan on my AMD 1.1Duron Processor.
Now the PC is very slow and when I checked teh processor speed it stated it
was running at 498mhz.

Have I screwed my CPU?

Glenn

How would I have changed that? Can you please advise how to check and reset
this please.
Thanks
Glenn

Certainly, the information requested is in the manual which
should have been read. Since you asked, you apparently
didn't know about the use of the manual, "jest" was doing
you a favor.

All I am asking for is a bit of help and advice. I dont have a manual for
the motherboard.
If anyone can help me here, it would be very much appreciated.

Where can I find teh place to change the FSB. All I did was add a CPU fan,
and I did take the CPU out to clean the residue of the old sealant stuff off
and re seat it.
I have Award Bios

Glenn -

There are two main "places" where the speed of your processor could be set.

.. Via "jumpers" (which are little plastic bits that complete circuits on
your motherboard). There are two sets of jumpers that may be involved if
your processor speed is set via jumpers: (1) processor front side bus and
(2) multiplier. If your motherboard uses this method, you may have
inadvertently removed one or more of these jumpers when you changed your CPU
fan.

.. Via settings in your motherboard's BIOS. If your motherboard uses this
method, you may have inadvertently cleared your BIOS, resetting it to
failsafe defaults.

Since we are not mind-readers, there is no way anyone in this group can
currently instruct you as to which method is employed on your computer and
how to correct the problem. You haven't even told us who makes your
computer, who makes your motherboard and what your motherboard model is.

Your motherboard manual is the ONLY source of this information.

I can tell you that for a 1.1 GHz Duron, your Front Side Bus should be 100
MHz (doubled to 200 MHz for Double Data Rate) and your Multiplier should be
5.5 (200 times 5.5 is 1100 MHz ... or 1.1 GHz).

If the motherboard was installed by the computer manufacturer, you will need
to contact them for information regarding how to set the processor speed.

Further... some motherboards will need the FSB set at 100 MHz for a Duron
with a Multiplier of 11 (100 times 11 is 1100 MHz).

Your speed being about 500 MHz bears this out as a failsafe default. Many
motherboards will default to a 100 MHz Front Side Bus with a multiplier of
5. You're reporting 498 MHz as your processor speed... which, due to
rounding, sure sounds like a 500 MHz Failsafe default. And this is very
likely set in your system BIOS. Look for a key to press (such as DEL, F1,
F2, etc.) when you first turn on your system to gain access to the BIOS
setup screens.

Thank you Jeff for your very useful and helpful information
the Mother baord is QDI Kinetiz 7E
I very much doubt I removed any jumpers as the only thing i took out was the
fan and the CPU. Reseated and added the fan.

I have looked in the bios and cannot see anything that has changed,
Would I have inadvertantly damaged the CPU? If so, would it have changed the
rating to 458?
Glenn

Also:
Bios is Award Bios V6.00PG

If anyone could point me where and how to change the setting, I would be
very greatful

Cheers
Glenn

You know the make and model and mobo manuals are on-line for
download from the mfg'r web site. Do you want us to look up
the all the links or do you want to "do it myself?"

When changing the fan did you pull the CMOS battery out
How long did it take you to change the fan? The CMOS setting could have defaulted from a weak battery
If the CMOS settings defaulted, you might think about changing the battery

Push the "del" key when booting the system, that will get you into "CMOS Setup Utility

You should see something called "Softmenu Setup
select that item by using the up and down arrow keys on keyboard, push "Enter

A new screen come up, Check "CPU operating Speed," if it doesn't show the right speed, highlight and change to the speed to your CPU

push "F10" key to save, type "Y" for yes save setting, computer will then reboo

Hi Glenn -

Your motherboard manual is listed on the following page:
http://www.qdigrp.com/qdisite/eng/support/manual_e.htm

To find your manual from the long list, look for "Kinetiz 7E" in the list of
available files. Download your manual and unzip it onto your hard disk.

I found this link by inserting "QDI Kinetiz 7E" into Google. First link
returned was the model page for your motherboard. On that page was a button
to click for the above link for the manual download page.

Upon reading your motherboard manual, I find that your board will
automatically detect the Front Side Bus and multiplier for a Locked
processor (i.e., one which was manufactured by AMD as "locked" to a
particular frequency and hasn't been unlocked by some method of modifying
the traces on the top of it).

It's likely that you need to go into your BIOS and tell it to automatically
detect your processor.

Turn on your system and press the DEL key on your keyboard repeatedly
immediately upon starting. This should trigger the BIOS opening up the
startup menu.

On the main startup menu, use your arrow keys to navigate to "LOAD OPTIMIZED
DEFAULTS" then go through the other menus and see that everything is
detected and set up properly. DO NOT make changes to items that you don't
understand.... if you're confused, take your computer into a computer shop
and have it set up properly! In any event, when everything is set up,
navigate to SAVE AND EXIT.

Jef

Yes! Thank him and then do a bit of your own research, using sources you
have, or should have. If you don't have them, there is always the
manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

Don't be such a moronic twit!
