Asus A7V333 Board with latest BIOS. Changed from AMD
XP1800 to XP2400 processor. System boots with Win 98
drive but does not get past startup screen on XP Pro
drive installed. I was told to try to fdisk the mbr but
could not accomplish that. Do I have to reinstall the
OS. Thanks

There is no such thing as "fdisk the motherboard". You probably need to do a
repair install of XP. Follow these steps:

Start the operating system from the CD-ROM (you may have to set your BIOS to
have the CD drive as the first boot device)

When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware

and then prompts you to select one of the following options:

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Press ENTER.

Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.

A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system

prompts you to select one of the following options:

To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press
ESC.

Press R to start the automatic repair process. After repairing Windows XP,

you will need re-download all updates, starting with SP1. Also you may have
to re-activate, so have your Product Key handy.

Steve!

MBR = Master Boot Record.

If using Windows 98 you can, indeed, use fdisk /mbr to repair the boot
record!

I guess that is what happens when you try to read too quickly! When I read
the post I saw "motherboard". At least in my mind I did!

Happens at this end also (-;

XP has a FIXMBR command available from the recovery console that
replaces the old FDISK /MBR. At least that is what START/HELP and
SUPPORT indicates. I have used it at least once as I recall but I don't
remember exactly how to do it. Look in Help and Support.

Good Luck!

Thanks to all for all of the advice, sorry I should have
said 'master boot record' in the first place to clear
things up. Thanks for the advice on the FIXMBR, I will
look into that. It would sure be nice to fix the problem
w/o having to go through all the time to re-install. PS.
If anyone knows the FIXMBR process I would sure
appreciate it. Merry Christmas and thanks again. Richard

To use FIXMBR, boot the XP CD. After you get to the Setup window,
choose 'R' and you will eventually ser a command prompt. At it, type
FIXMBR. You be asked if you really want to do this. Type 'y' and
Enter. The system will probably ask you for an Administrator password.
If didn't set one up, just leave it blank and press Enter. There may be
one or two other questions or choices for you to make but there answers
are obvious as I recall.

Good luck and go for it.

Wow, did I write that? While it is technically accurate, its grammar
and spelling is atrocious. I know better than that so I will just chalk
it up to being up so early and not yet having a cup of coffee.
